Mixing up somersaults and striptease, Empire will be on show in Christchurch  on October 21 for two weeks, launching its New Zealand tour. This performance is a mixture of circus, cabaret, variety and burlesque.  It had its world premiere season in New York in 2012, where it was the first tented show ever seen in Times Square.

Billed as a 90-minute “theatrobatic adventure”, Empire stars international talent and an eccentric cast of characters from the seductive Gorilla Girls from Ukraine, who form perfectly balanced pyramids on top of each other, to the Ethiopian foot juggler, Black Flintstone, who throws and impossibly catches his brother Big Mac Boy on his feet.

Empire is at Horncastle Arena, Christchurch from October 21-November 2, tickets $59-$149 available from Ticketek.co.nz; Odlins Plaza, Wellington, November 25-December 7; Wynyard Quarter, Auckland, January 6-January 25.
